I've got two friends joining in the auction. The incredible A Guyra Girl who makes THE BEST socks. I have several pairs made by her and they're amazing. She's kindly offered to donate a pair of bespoke socks. Made to fit your feet. Isn't she amazing?

Emily the Enabler is my darling friend who is a whiz at dying all things wool related. Her fibre and yarns are to die for (see what I did there?). I'm not sure on details of this fantastic donation yet, but I'll keep you posted.

I'm so grateful to know these incredible women. They make each and everyone of my days brighter.

I'm planning on running this auction through my blog and just getting bids in the comments. Is this a good idea? What do I have to be careful of?

In the meantime while we're waiting for this auction to kick off, why not donate some funds?

HST madness

My girlfriends and I started a quilting bee last year. I finished my quilt yesterday.

Here's mine in all its eye blinding glory. It was supposed to have a licorice all sort theme, but that didn't really work. I think it turned out neat anyway.

I used a sarong my daughters got for me from Bali as the backing. It wasn't quite big enough

so I added a strip of the feature fabric around the edges.

Bound with an orange dot, if you know me you'll know this is far out of my comfort zone.

I quilted it with a swirly motif running across the width of the quilt.

This cute little house print is my favourite.

Matjana Preschool

You know those friends of yours that you wish you were more like. My best friend is my hero, I wish I was more like her. She ran away from home at 14 and we didn't see her for years, then she came back into my life and we went on stupid road trips together then she studied and eventually ended up in Swaziland. She's currently undertaking a PhD, with DIAL UP!! I know right. She comes back from time to time and entertains me with stories of her life, some hilarious, some tragic. All in all the girl is an inspiration.

Well, she is one of the founders of Matjana Preschool. That's her in the photo. So as not to be so boring and white bread middle of the road I've become the Vice President of the commitee of Matjana.

The main thing I need to do is to fundraise. I'm going to auction one of my quilts. I just need to finish it first. So keep checking in here, once it starts I need you to pimp this auction too. You may just get a fantastic bargain.

In the mean time, if you're looking for somewhere new to donate to this Christmas why not think of the Swazi preschoolers, or why not Zoidberg. lol.

Super Secret Christmas Present

Here is my latest finished object.

An I spy quilt for a dear friend. I modified Once Upon a Time to work with 5 inch charm squares. I quilted it in a grid about 3/4 of an inch apart avoiding the I spy squares.

I really like the concept of following the yellow brick road and making up a story as you go along.

It's for a dear friend's children for Christmas. I was going to keep it as a surprise, but she went out like a demon possessed started a quilt for each of her kids. Rather than have her drowning in quilts I thought it best that I speak up.

Another friend gave me some binding made of different lengths of homespun. The myriad of colours really makes this quilt pop.

For the backing I used some Ikea fabric and some Sherbet pips to fill in the gaps. I made a line of I spy squares that goes from one side to the other.

I hope it brings many hours of entertainment and warmth.

My LQS hosted a mystery quiltalong on Saturday. I showed up with my precut strips and sewed and sewed and sewed. Despite my gargantuan effort I still didn't get the top completed. I still have more sewing to do.

I've also been working on a Willy Wonka costume for Big C's school play. I have 8 Oompa-Loompas to do yet.

A fabulous dress I wore on Melbourne cup day. Yes, that lining is Beverly Hills 90210 vintage sheet. Thank you Jess for your awesome score.

A quilt that is a Christmas surprise so no further details on it at this stage. Still got to finish quilting and binding.

Quilt for MIL for Christmas. She doesn't read my blog so I'm safe here. Rooftop Garden by Moda. I really like this range. I found them on a trip to Tamworth where I also got to try out the Handy Quilter Sweet Sixteen. ZOMG I am in love. I need to sell my soul, but I will own this machine one day.

A quilt that was made from bee blocks from my favourite group of women. I'm thinking about giving this one to my Dad for Christmas. He can always use the little bit of love that a quilt brings. he's just gotten a new house and a manly blanket would be most welcome I'm sure.

There are two ways a branch can fall, away from a fence, and onto a fence. this one chose onto the fence. Luckily it's not too big and the fence should be easily repaired.

Been making monsters for a birthdat present. This is the worse of the two. Why didn't I get a picture of the best one? Anyway. it was my first play with applique, and in amounts this small it's not so bad.

I lost my lovely quilted Moleskine that I was recording my lists in. being the slacker that i am I just gave up writing lists, but the other day I decided to suck it up and start using a different note book.

it's a sweet little green leather bound number and I think it will do very nicely. it was a Christmas gift from one of my darlings. Without further ado here are many weeks of late lists.

I know it's a short list, I love reading, but have really been turned off of fiction lately. That said I did buy two copies of The Hound of the Baskervilles on the weekend. Fail. If you know of a good book about the mutiny on the Bounty please let me know. I have a big crush on Fletcher Christian.

Quilting bee blocks

I've signed up for a few quilting bees lately. I've decided to do practice blocks with Denyse Schmidt's Picnics & Fairgrounds. Some of these blocks are killers so trying it out with my fabric first is a wise idea.

This one is for Quilting climber

It's beautiful block, but it kicked my ass so many times. I became well acquainted with my unpicker. The problem with mistakes in bee blocks is you only have a limited amount of fabric to work with, and once it's too small there's nothing you can do. I got there in the end and I'm very pleased with it.

Here's a practice block for the New Bee on the Block. Here's the link for this block, it was lots of fun and turned out very sweet indeed.

And last but not least, a nice simple block. It specifies charm squares, but I just cut what I needed from yardage.

I think my quilt made from all my practice blocks is going to be a cracker.

Op-Shop Awesomeness

Hit the op-shops as I do most Mondays and today I cleaned up.

Most of this is Johnson ware for one of my sweet friends. I really like the pastel plates, I will enjoy using these until I get to deliver them

Here is the biggest piece of gold. Got to love royal wedding memorabilia.

I'm not sure if it's by Johnson, maybe you can tell from the bottom.

And my first bit of Wembly, it's not a swan, but who can say no to a grotesque fish.

All in all a great haul I think. Found anything wonderful at the op-shop lately?

I found a card my Grandmother sent me with this image on it the other day. Her husband works at the National Gallery of Art and I think she would frequent the gift shop for our cards. I never received any Hallmark schmuk from her anyway.

Looking at this reminded me of quilt blocks. Now my mind is ticking over with ways to turn this image into a quilt.

Any ideas?

Hot Water

Our house got hit by lightning quite sometime ago. Actually, a tree near our house, under which runs our mains cable got hit by lightning.

Here's the wound on the poor little thing.

This gash continues up the whole length of the trunk. The tree next to it also has a neat lightning scar. It's amazing how much sap drips out. Despite their wounds both trees appear to be doing well.

So, due to said lighning strike our hot water system blew. We've been relying on first principle, being a slow combustion stove for hot water. Some perople are all nostalgic for the past, let me tell you, lighting a fire to have hot water in four hours is not in any way charming. It's awful dirty and hard work.

Yesterday we bought an Apricus Solar Hot Water System, and today work began.

I may or not be terribly excited.

In other news, I get to snorgle a baby tonight.

The under the rainbow quilting bee is underway. Our block for July is a cracker. I've had to do a trial run, and this is the result.

Everyone in our house loves it. my mum's little poodle even decided it was good enough to walk on.

I have decided that each month I will make a practice block in the picnics & fairgrounds range and end up with two quilts for the price of one.

I need to make a choice on what I'm going to be getting everyone to sew for me. Any ideas?

Big Blue

Everyone I know was gobsmacked when Red Pepper Quilts made this amazing quilt, and I fell heavily for this beauty.

Here is my homage to The Poseidon Quilt and City Green.

Introducing

BIG BLUE

First take one pack of Robert Kaufmann Kona Solids Poseidon and My Blue Heaven and two fat quarters of a purple you like.

Cut these into rectangles 4 1/2 inches wide.

Then cut 2 1/2 inch strips of linen. Sew the coloured strips to the linen.

Then cut these strips into pieces 4 1/2 inches wide.

Sew these together into strips.Alternating colour and linen

Then sew these strips together with a lines strip in between each coloured strip.

Keep going until you think you're going crazy.

Wear the whole monstrous thing as a dress for a while, lament the fact you can't walk on stilts.

Bind and quilt the giant thing. Insert many colourful cuss words.

Breathe a sigh of relief.

This thing is too big for me to fit it in my frame. Hopefully the recipient likes it as much as me.

The one that started it all

This is the quilt that started it all.

I bought a heap of fabric from the Blush line at my LQS.

I cut it into squares and rectangles all based on my ruler.

I didn't bother cutting off selvedges, I quite like them.

I sewed them together, adding more when it was too short and cutting off when it was too large.

I was intimidated by machine quilting so I started to hand quilt, this was taking forever so I got over myself and just tried my machine. I didn't have the correct feet, I used my zipper foot to stipple, it worked okay.

We had fun deciding what we were going to quilt on each block .

My big girl loved it, so it has been hers ever since.

I just bunged the back together as best I could, It's one of my favourite backings I've done.

It gets used every night.

Big blue, as this has been dubbed, is sucking my life essence away, I will never attempt to quilt a monster quilt on my little machine. It is gorgeous though.

Rainbow Connection II

Finished one rainbow zig-zag, I do love half-square triangles. It looks horribly wrinkly here. Sigh, must take better photos.

Anyway, it' for a friend who signed up for a craft swap on Facebook. You know who you are, tell me if you like it or, like your sister you'd prefer something else.

I pieced the back continuing with the rainbow theme, I think it looks fan-freaking-tastic. I like the way the zig-zag quilting echos the colours on the front, but it looks sweet on the back too.

Here's a close up of the blue and green I've been working on, coming together slowly. My kids just got back from an overseas jaunt so I can't see it getting any quicker now. I'd like to have it all finished up for a trip to the Kimberly in early June. Fingers crossed.

Special Dogs

Some dogs are special. We have one such dog.

Her name is Lily.

She has epilepsy and a heart murmur and all kinds of crap sticks to her fur.

My eldest daughter decided she needed a quilt, because all 'special' dogs need their own quilt so they can make it smell their own 'special' scent.

I immediately thought of Stitched in Color's bottled rainbows.

C picked all the colours and glued them in place with her glue stick. She then sewed around some of them and I sewed around others.

I free-motion quilted the trunk to have a little hole for a parrot or sugar-glider. We also included a freshly dropped apple.

I'm so proud of my big girl, maybe she'll catch a quilting bug just like me.

Since then I've been playing in a sea of blues and greens.

The rainbows are giving me all kids of grief, I'm trying to decide how best to use them.

I've given absolutely no thought to the purple, it's just nice to know it's there.

Knitting for me

Ages ago I bought a delicious custom skein of hand dyed yarn from the beautiful Courtney. When I received it I was so crazy in love that I knew I needed more so i could make myself a cardi for the freezing winters we have here.

Well, I received the rest and I am smitten.

I cast on and knit like a demon possessed. It is lovely, I adore the little grey flecks in amongst all that aqua. I love the sweet girly colours.

I think I am going to have to go back to the bleached blonde of my teenage years and try to invoke a little Wendy James in me so I can wear these soft colours.

We were asked to make a cake or biscuits for the school P&F to sell as a fundraiser at the athletics carnival. I decided on no bake chocolate mice. Mmmmmm delicious and easy too.

Progress

Current WIP, rainbow zig zag.

Starting with 6.5 inch squares, because that's how wide my ruler is. I've got three prints in each colour of the rainbow except indigo because it's a scam.

I had a very bright orange, I had to get rid of it, orange makes me feel ill. I went out yesterday and bought some softer oranges, almost apricot.

I'm liking how this is turning out. I will need to get some more white, but not today.

This is another HST quilt I made a few weeks ago in predominantly soft blues and cream. I don't know why this stupid PC turned it upside down. Our house got hit by lightning a week ago and all my appliances have been sick, I'm using the children's laptop which is sub-par.

This is my Moleskine I use to keep quilt ideas and figuring in. I pimped it with a few scraps and some decorative stitching.

One weekend = one quilt

Here's the fabric selection for my latest quilt. I've been collecting vintage napkins from the op-shops for a while now to go in the centre of the blocks. Said friend has the most beautiful and soft colour preferences, lots of blue and grey. I added yellow because subtlety is not my strong point.

I think the yellow really makes the design pop.

This is my first foray into straight line quilting and I really, really like how it turned out.

It's not a full sized bed quilt, but just the right size for snuggling under on the lounge.

A busy week

What a busy week we've had. First of all I made pizza dough for big girl's birthday party. This led to making bread. It was delicious and was scoffed while it was still warm.

In preparation for the party we smashed up an old piano that had been sitting outside. Pianos are heavy, very heavy.

When I was a kid Mum had a picture called Piano, piano where are you. Or something along those lines. All the little hammers and felts and such make me want to create something similar.

I have large collection of kitsch tea-towels. I found this little beauty at the op-shop the other day.

It doesn't get much more kitsch than a California table cloth.

Little girl has chicken pox so we're going to be spending the next few days in quarantine. I wonder what fun stuff we'll get up to.

What not to do

Quilt when the backing is folded over. Lots and lots of seam ripping is on the cards for me today.

Here's how Alice is looking when the mistakes are harder to spot. My eldest daughter told me she didn't like the yellow, then the next day said that it was very effective. Can't make up her mind, much like her mother.

I've tried to do a different style of free-motion quilting in each log cabin block. It's becoming obvious to me that I have a long, long way to go before I can call myself a decent quilter. I do enjoy it though. I should have pieced the back, but I was so keen I just went right ahead and use a whole piece of fabric. I will probably end up having to trim down the edges quite a lot. I hope it doesn't detract from the design too much.

One thing I would like to do is take more notice of the fabric I use, designers, place of purchase. etc. maybe next time.

Wonderful wonderland

I may have a problem. It seems I am addicted to making wonky log cabins with Wonderland creatures in the middle. Fabric is leftover scraps, I am finding this wonderful for stash busting.

I don't know what to sash the blocks with. I'd like to keep their wonkiness and sash them in a solid.

Quilts hither and thither

A quilt for one of my best friends who is having a baby any day now.

I used free-motion quilting techniques from Leah Day, she's incredible. Her blog is a wealth of free-motion quilting information and inspiration - go and check it out.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar print came from my local quilt shop which I love love love. I used a lot of green to go with this. I love the apple backing and the polka dot binding.

I hope the little guy this is for gets a lot of use from it throughout the years.

Each panel was quilted with a different pattern. I had lots of fun deciding which pattern to use where.

And last but not least another strip quilt made for another baby. Just quilted with vaguely parallel lines. Photo thanks to my mum.

Little A is doing a project on Dias Del Muerto. Because I am a rocking good mother I have made some sugar skulls for her to bring in. The instructions say not to make on rainy or humid days, this has had me screwed because it seems to rain every day lately, maybe I should make an ark.

Meringue powder? Anyone know what this is? I used a pavlova egg, here's hoping it works. Anyway I think these little guys are very cute. Now I only need six more kilos of caster sugar and five more Pav eggs to get enough done. My kitchen floor has that delightful granular feeling that only sugar can bring.

So we decided to go on a Christmas holiday to Grassy Head. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. However, we had taken our little camping expedition in the middle of one of the most major rain events on the Eastern seaboard in the last five or so years.

Knitting Camp

Oh what a magnificent weekend. Couldn't take a photo to save my life, ripped out more knitting than I did, ate like a hell damn ass king, walked up and down the hill about fifty times I'd like to do this every weekend.

I gifted my old broken spinning wheel to a lovely friend. I hope the wheel gives her plenty of joy.

Upon reading a friends blog about her WIP's I have decided to have a stocktake of my own.

1. Grey crochet throw - Only two balls to go. I'll probably gift this to my Aunt.

2. First socks - One sock finished, secon 1/4 done. Mine, all mine

3. Green Scarf of many mistakes - Still got a long way to go withthis one and I am terrible at knitting lace. I love the green though.

4. Mohair G-string - Only about 2 feet of i-cord to go. Definitely going to my friend because she's kinky and will like it.

5. Granny bag - Once more square to make ends to weave in and lining to sew. Not sure what to do about a handle though. Gifting this one too.

6. Hexagon scarf - Boring me to death, I haven't touched this in over a year. My eldest likes it so I'll probably give it to her.

7. Blue socks - Almost done. Making these two at a time which I have decided is my style. Only a couple more rows and I can bind off.

8. Dragonfly shawl - On the edging, that said each row gets bigger than the last. This was supposed to be for my mother's wedding last May but meh! I'm lazy what can I say and I lost it for ages then I lost the pattern.

9. Pirate tri-corn - I love mindless crochet, I hopw it all turns out in the felt. Going to my brother. I'm sure he'll appreciate a hat as thick as a bear in the tropics.

I'm endeavouring to keep my WIP's under five from now on and will not cast on anything else until I finish an object. I have a terrible knack of starting a million things and finishing nothing. I'd like to churn out some objects instead of driving my family nuts with so many bags of yarn lying about the place.

What awful stuff to crochet with . I can't find the stitches, it's more just a case of poke in the hook and hope for the best.

I'm creating this monstrosity as a gift for a friend with beautiful red hair. She never wears pink so I hope the tongue in cheek is taken well.

I've been trying really hard not to start any new projects, but I've broken my own rules for this. Rules were made to be broken after all.
